The exhaust and the muffler are critical components of any vehicle, but what exactly do they do? We asked our Dick Poe Chrysler Jeep service department techs this very question. Here's what they told us.
The Exhaust System
An automotive exhaust system takes harmful gases from engine combustion and turns then into carbon dioxide and water vapor. This happens by way of a catalytic converter, a part that removes nitrogen atoms from noxious gases. The exhaust system also keeps the gases out of the vehicle cabin, expelling them from the vehicle through the tailpipe.
The Muffler
Part of the exhaust system, the muffler has the job of dampening the loud sounds emitted from the engine. After the catalytic converter turns exhaust fumes into water vapor and CO2, the gases and the engine's sound waves enter the muffler. When gases and sound waves pass through the muffler's interior holes and tubes, the acoustics of the sound waves change, becoming dampened and minimized. This keeps vehicles much quieter as they speed over El Paso highways and roads.
