Most car batteries only last for five years, and having a battery that's going to start your engine reliably is really important. If you are concerned that your battery might be starting to go bad, you should take a look at some of these tips on how to tell if you need a new battery soon. At Dick Poe Chrysler Jeep, we are excited to show you some tips on how to use a multimeter, the device that you will use to determine if your battery is going bad.

If you want to use a multimeter, the first thing that you're going to and want to do is turn off your engine and let the light stay on for about two minutes. This will get a grid of any extra charge that might be on the vehicle. Later, you're going to want to set the multimeter to about 12.5 V.

Connect the wires of the multimeter to the corresponding colors. When you turn your engine back on, it might dip down to about 10 V on the multimeter reading, but it should crank back up to 12.5 V or higher. If it doesn't, you might have a problem with your battery.
