Lead-acid batteries have been around for decades. That's mainly due to their reliability in many conditions. However, this type of battery doesn't do well in extreme temperatures. Why?

In very cold weather, the holding capacity of the battery goes down as the temperature drops. At freezing, it loses 20 percent of its capacity. At 22°F, it loses 50 percent. Older batteries lose even more. This means fewer amps available to start the engine. An old battery trying to start an engine on very cold days can easily die.
